Work Process Design
In colleges and universities, as in other organizations, there are many opportunities for improving work procedures and systems, for simplifying and streamlining, and for reducing inefficiency and waste. ODL provides publications, workshops, and professional assistance in process improvement and root cause analysis, incorporating effective, contemporary approaches used in other sectors. For further information, contact us at center@odl.rutgers.edu.
The Process Excellence Framework is a systematic, organization wide approach to reviewing, improving, and monitoring work processes. The model incorporates concepts found in other effective approaches, such as Six Sigma, and emphasizes the importance of systematic review of programs and services, measurement, and process redesign and improvement strategies. The Center provides facilitation, materials, and training for departments and units interested in utilizing the framework to improve service.
The Process Excellence Framework is designed to be a primer for facilitators and participants of improvement initiatives that take place at the department or organization level.
For more detailed information concerning the Process Excellence Framework, contact Kate Immordino (Manager of Research and Assessment) at 732-932-3020, ext. 4022, or via email at immordino@odl.rutgers.edu.
Root cause analysis is a structured method of determining causes of problems and identifying potential solutions. The Center provides materials, workshops, and professional support to move beyond the identification of symptoms and explanations in order to identify core work process and communication problems.
Organizational Development Facilitation
Facilitation, the art of making something happen easily, whether one-on-one or in a group, requires an individual to wear many hats - those of coach, conflict manager, process leader, and climate monitor in support of cooperative approaches and collective decision-making. ODL provides training and materials to units interested in developing an internal cadre of facilitators and/or in developing these skills in the organization as a whole. Additionally, the Center can assist units that prefer external facilitation of specific activities.
Benchmarking and Comparative Analysis
Benchmarking and comparative analyses are useful in assessing performance and developing improvement goals and targets, and for identifying innovative processes, programs, and uses of technology. The Center provides materials and workshops, and assists departments in identifying appropriate benchmarks and making constructive use of comparison data from other institutions.
