Excellence in Higher Education Self-Assessment Program

Colleges and universities today are being held to increasingly higher standards by the many groups to which they provide programs and services. To meet these rising expectations, higher education has been challenged to continue to improve the quality of academics and the full array of co-curricular and support services. The Excellence in Higher Education (EHE) program adapts the Malcolm Baldrige program - the hallmark of organizational excellence in other sectors - to the particular needs, culture, and language of colleges and universities.

The Excellence in Higher Education (EHE) model provides a guide to comprehensive organizational self-assessment and methodical action planning. After completing the EHE process, an organization has a useful inventory of its achievements and shortcomings, and clear priorities for improvement. Order forms for the EHE Self-Assessment Guide and Workbook, and a CD-ROM providing additional background information are available from the National Association of College and University Business Officers. The following is a list of Rutgers units and other institutions using this model. For information, contact us at center@odl.rutgers.edu

Needs Identification and Priority Setting

Most, if not all, academic and administrative departments lack the resources to carry out all of the initiatives they might ideally undertake. Establishing meaningful priorities and making difficult choices in the context of growing demands and opportunities is a critical task for leaders. The Center provides information on concepts, strategies, and tools, and professional assistance with data-based needs assessment and priority-setting processes.
